Friday night was an exciting night at the Air Canada Centre, four new members were introduced as the 2016 Hall of Fame class and the game was NUTS. This game was full of defensive breakdowns, turnovers and offence in the most unlikely of ways. Komarov and Marincin with their 1st goals of the season with Komarov’s goal coming on the penalty kill. Wayne Simmonds also had a short handed goal for the Flyers. The game was somewhat even heading into the 3rd period, then the Leafs picked up the ball that Steve Mason metaphorically dropped.
Don’t worry Leaf fans, Auston Matthews played decent and had some good scoring chances including hitting a post. The puck is just not going in for him right now so relax, it’ll be okay. I said in my team preview of the Flyers that this game would come down to what goalie shows up, or more accurately doesn’t show up! Tonight that was Steve Mason. With 6 goals against in 23 shots that is just unacceptable, he has to be better for the Flyers especially when they have the lead.
Led by Morgan Rielly who had a 4 point night, the Leafs came alive in the 3rd period scoring 4 goals on 9 shots. Once Marincin scored from the point on an AWESOME pass from Rielly, it seemed as if it took all the wind out of the Flyers sails. Mitch Marner looked amazing as usual getting to loose pucks all over the ice and was rewarded with a goal and an assist. He is underrated by most since the Leafs have Nylander and Matthews but he is my pick for the top rookie on the Leafs this season.
This game is hard to explain as the Flyers held the edge in hits and shots but the Leafs were better on face offs. As a hockey fan this game was fun to watch for both teams, but there is still some glaring weaknesses for both teams and that is most definitely defense. 3 of the Leafs top 6 defenseman are in the BOTTOM 10 in the league in GA/60 (goals against per 60 mins on the ice) for all defenseman. That needs to be fixed, not sure how they will but its going to be exciting to see and painful at the same time.
If you are a Leaf fan you can take some positives and negatives from this game, it is important to remember that the Leafs are a rebuilding team and as much as we( including me on twitter) like to complain about players this team is looking promising.
Congrats to the 4 named to the Hall of Fame tonight. Tonight is also about remembrance so please take a moment and remember the past and present hero’s that lost their lives fighting for our beautiful country.
