Saturday night was the Leafs vs Penguins, battle of the vets and rookies. As expected the vets came through in the end with a 4-1 win. The game was close all the way up to the 3rd period until Rust and Crosby added goals to put the game out of reach. The Leafs were out shot 49 to 36 which shows once again that their defense still needs lots of work. They did a better job of keeping the Pens shooting from the outside, the Penguins managed to capitalize on the few chances they had from the inside.

The Penguins dominated almost every category, shots, quality chances and face offs were in the Pens favor. I believe the Leafs played an okay game and held up to the Penguins relatively well. Connor Brown looked great on the Matthews line with Zach Hyman cycling the puck together and creating chances. Matthews looked tired tonight, I still want him to step up and handle the puck more and use his size to his advantage instead of trying all these tricks to try to lose the defender. Those tricks might work in lower level hockey but not in the NHL as often, still a learning curve for the Leafs rookies but all in all played decent tonight.

The better team got the win tonight, the Penguins have a very good team and neutralized the Leafs so props to them. Marner had another good game creating chance after chance, man i love what this kid brings to the Leafs. The Leaf players shouldn’t feel down after this game, yes they made some mistakes but this is a rebuild and is bound to happen. Keep trucking and move forward, this team will look very different in a season or two so take this time to learn.

Anderson is stepping up BIG and holding these Leafs in games they should be out of a lot earlier. 49 shots on net in a single game is a lot for a goalie but Anderson is up to the challenge. He mad a highlight reel save jumping across the net making a diving save. I cant wait until he has some solid defense in front of him, the Leafs have a great goalie back there!
