The 2016-2017 NHL season is a VERY strong rookie class, especially if you are a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto has 3 players in the top 5 of rookie scoring so far this season, which is amazing. Lets take a look at the top 5 and then an honorable mention down below.

#1 Patrik Laine
Team Pos   GP     G      A     P     +/-  PIM    PPG   PPP
WPG     R     23     12     6     18     -1     8         5          7
Led by Patrik Laine who is the Jets new sniper, my goodness this kid is good and loves to show up in big moments. Laine has 2 hat tricks already in only 23 GP which is just nuts. Laine has 5 power play goals so far this season. We know he can shoot, he will need to be consistent down the stretch and score 5 on 5 to hold onto top spot.

#2 Auston Matthews
Team Pos   GP     G      A     P     +/-  PIM    PPG   PPP
TOR      C      20     8      8     16    -3      0         1        6
Whats even more nuts is Auston Matthews is still at #2 even though he had a 13 game goal scoring drought where he only managed to get 3 points in that span. Matthews is one of/if not the best Leaf on most nights and is tied for 5th in the NHL in shots on goal trailing guys like Seguin and Ovechkin. I for see Matthews taking over #1 sooner rather than later.

#3 Mitchell Marner
Team Pos   GP     G      A     P     +/-  PIM    PPG   PPP
TOR       C      20    7      9     16     -4     14       1         3
Mitch Marner is another Leaf prospect who at times has looked untouchable this season, he could easily add a few more points to that total judging by the number of missed chances early in the season. He may be overshadowed by Matthews and Laine…which is a mistake but its good for him to focus on his game.

 #4 Zach Werenski
Team Pos   GP     G      A     P     +/-  PIM    PPG   PPP
CBJ        D     19     5       11   16    +4      4          3        8
How about Zach Werenski tied with Mitch Marner in points, Werenski is a defenseman and is beasting so far this season. Helping the Blue Jackets to a couple big wins including a 10-0 beat down of the Habs. If he keeps that pace he will most likely win the Calder, but it is hard for a defenseman to keep that kind of scoring pace all season.

#5 William Nylander
Team Pos   GP     G      A     P     +/-  PIM    PPG   PPP
TOR      C     20      6      9     15    -4       6         4        9
Nylander is the 3rd piece in the big 3 for Toronto, He is fast, agile, crazy good vision and hands. He has every skill to be a legit talent in the NHL. He has been quiet the last few games and even a few times wound up on the 4th line, consistency is key in the NHL. Nylander will have to find that if he wants to be an elite star.

Honorable Mention
Matt Murray
7 GP 1.58 GAA, .945 SV%
Already a Stanley Cup winner after leading the Penguins to the cup this past year, he has put his name in the hat for the #1 job in Pittsburgh. He may be getting overlooked since this season has a strong skater class of rookies, but Murray should be at the top of everyone’s list especially if he keeps putting up these type of numbers.

I forsee Matthews taking over very shortly in points. Although Laine is good I think it will be between Matthews, Weresnki and Murray, especially if Werenski keeps getting points like he has been. If one of thos guys drops off expect Laine to fill in that hole.
